The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has directed its prepaid customers to either swipe or insert their prepaid cards into their meters before making any credit purchase at approved vending points or ECG’s offices.
The implementation of the energy relief package comes at the back of President Akufo-Addo’s sixth nationwide address in which he announced government’s plans to alleviate the economic impacts COVID-19 has imposed on people and businesses.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, April 28, 2020, the Company explained that the directive will enable them gather accurate consumption data to carry out government’s COVID-19 electricity relief.
“This is to enable the ECG to gather accurate consumption data to ensure a smooth implementation of the Government of Ghana (GoG) COVID-19 Electricity Relief,” the statement in part read.
The statement further said that reduction in the electricity tariffs will begin by the end of April.
The general public is hereby reminded that the relief package will reflect in the following ways:
Lifeline customers shall have 100 percent relief of their consumption for the months of April, May, and June 2020.
All other customers shall receive 50 percent of their March 2020 consumption for the months of April, May, and June 2020.
April benefits will be realised in May, May benefits in June, and June benefits in July.
